A Heritage Mandarin Learner on a Mission

Case Study 1: Lilian

Starting Point

Lilian grew up speaking a Chinese dialect at home, which gave her solid listening skills. However, her Mandarin speaking and reading skills were weaker in comparison. Like many heritage learners, she struggled with finding the right approach that matched her level. Her goals were clear:

  • Speak confidently with relatives and Chinese people during her upcoming trip to China.
  • Build the foundation to read Chinese novels in the future.
  • Use everyday Chinese apps such as WeChat and Baidu Map with ease.

Her main concern was whether she could find lessons that aligned with her background, pace, and long-term objectives.

Teaching Approach

After a placement test, I designed a personalised learning plan for Lilian:

  1. Daily Conversation Practice – Boosting fluency and pronunciation through real-life scenarios, expanding vocabulary, and building speaking confidence.
  2. HSK 4 Curriculum – Strengthening reading skills with structured materials, while exposing her to more complex sentence structures.

Tailored Homework – Weekly assignments designed around her progress and schedule, reinforcing classwork and addressing specific weaknesses.

Results

Within a few months, Lilian made significant progress. She became more fluent and confident in her speaking, successfully used new vocabulary in real conversations, and improved her ability to read structured texts. During her trip to China, she was able to:

  • Communicate more smoothly with relatives.

  • Confidently type pinyin on WeChat.

  • Navigate Chinese apps with ease.

Her testimonial speaks volumes:

  1. “Shelley is a phenomenal teacher. I’ve taken private lessons with her for over 6 months and improved so much. She tailors lessons to my goals and level (which was vital as a heritage speaker). I had so much fun learning! I recently visited China and felt so much more confident speaking, using new vocabulary, typing pinyin on WeChat, and navigating Chinese apps. I highly recommend her and look forward to continuing my Mandarin journey!” – Lilian

Continued Plan

Lilian’s journey doesn’t stop here. With a strong foundation in place, our next step is to continue building her vocabulary and reading comprehension, gradually moving toward her long-term goal of reading full-length Chinese novels.
