From Medical Student to Confident Chinese-Speaking Doctor
Case Study 8: Dr Adrian’s 16-Year Mandarin Journey
Starting Point
Dr Adrian began learning Chinese with me in 2010 while he was still a university student studying medicine. At the time, his Chinese proficiency was around HSK 4 level. Our initial focus was on building a strong language foundation through the HSK curriculum, developing his vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening, and speaking skills.
As Adrian progressed in his medical career, his learning goals evolved. He wanted to use Chinese professionally to communicate more effectively with Chinese-speaking patients and provide better healthcare services.
Teaching Approach
Once Adrian entered the healthcare field, we shifted our focus towards Medical Chinese and healthcare-related communication.
Lessons included:
- Medical terminology and healthcare vocabulary
- Patient consultations and clinical communication
- Real-life healthcare scenarios
- Speaking practice designed for medical settings
As a result, Adrian was able to confidently communicate with Chinese-speaking patients, helping bridge language barriers and improve patient care.
In 2026, we introduced a new learning strategy based on the Flipped Classroom approach, which is particularly effective for advanced learners.
Before each lesson, Adrian studies carefully selected materials, including:
- Current affairs articles
- Podcasts and listening materials
- Books and reading resources
- Professional and general-interest topics
During class, the focus shifts from learning new content to producing high-quality Chinese output through:
- Discussions
- Question-and-answer exercises
- Critical thinking activities
- Vocabulary activation and sentence refinement
This approach maximizes speaking time and transforms passive knowledge into active communication skills.
Results
Over the years, Adrian has developed exceptional confidence and fluency in Chinese.
Today, he is able to:
- Communicate effectively with Chinese-speaking patients
- Discuss medical topics confidently in Chinese
- Participate in conversations on a wide range of professional and social topics
- Express complex ideas naturally and accurately
One of our key goals has always been helping Adrian think directly in Chinese rather than translating from English.
As I often joke with my students:
“My job is to install Chinese chips into their brains.”
The ultimate goal is for Chinese to become a natural communication tool—more fluent, more powerful, and less dependent on translation.
His testimonial speaks volumes:
- “A truly excellent place to learn Chinese. Shelley Tian is an outstanding teacher with years of experience helping students like me overcome the challenges of learning 中文. She genuinely cares about her students and their steady progression in the language. Classes are always constructive, fun and welcoming. They’ve helped me to improve not only my Chinese vocabulary but more importantly my understanding of Chinese sentence structure and Chinese culture. I highly recommend this school and its teacher! 我推荐这个培训学校!” – Dr Adrian
Continued Plan
At Adrian’s advanced level, language learning is no longer about memorizing vocabulary lists. Instead, it is about maintaining and refining fluency through meaningful and engaging content.
Our ongoing plan is to:
- Continue exploring current affairs and interesting topics
- Expand vocabulary through authentic materials
- Develop greater sophistication in speaking and expression
- Make Chinese a natural part of his weekly routine
After more than a decade of learning, Adrian’s journey demonstrates that language learning is not simply about passing exams—it’s about using Chinese confidently in both professional and everyday life.
