Advanced Business Chinese
Case Study 3: Kevin Tong
Starting Point
Kevin Tong, from a Chinese background, already had an advanced level of Chinese with no issues in daily communication. His reading skills were strong, but he aimed to further improve his business Chinese, particularly in the financial field.
Teaching Approach
To support Kevin’s learning goals, I applied the “i+1” principle, providing materials and challenges just slightly above his current level to push his progress steadily.
- In-Class Learning:
- I prepare targeted questions in specific business and financial contexts to uncover passive vocabulary and identify gaps.
- When gaps are found, we immediately address them with focused explanations and plenty of practice.
- Translation exercises are incorporated regularly to reinforce new vocabulary, sharpen sentence structure, and strengthen accuracy.

- Outside Practice:
- Kevin watches carefully selected business-related videos to expand his listening comprehension and exposure to real-world expressions.
- He applies what he learns in on-site situations, which is important for building confidence and fluency in real business interactions.

His testimonial speaks volumes:
- “After two years of lessons, I can say without hesitation that choosing Shelley has been the best decision of my Chinese-learning journey. When I first started learning Chinese, I experimented with a few teachers, only to notice a glaringly obvious difference in teaching quality. With Shelley, there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach. She adapts her teaching style to suit your needs and constantly varies the structure of lessons to stretch every dimension of your Chinese ability while keeping things engaging. Finding a teacher as exceptional as Shelley is rare in any field, let alone Chinese.
To say my Chinese has improved dramatically over the past two years would simply be an understatement of the highest magnitude. Above all, Shelley’s aptitude for teaching has instilled a genuine love for the language that keeps me motivated and hungry to learn more. I can wholeheartedly say that my lessons with her are some of the most stimulating hours of my week — not just for the Chinese itself, but also for the interesting conversations we have along the way. My progress speaks louder than any review I could write, and I’m sure her 300+ other students would agree.” – Kevin
Results and Ongoing Goals
Kevin has already shown consistent improvement in vocabulary breadth, active usage, and precision when discussing financial topics. As his vocabulary base expands, our next focus is to enhance his reading efficiency by improving both speed and comprehension so he can process professional financial texts more effectively.
Through continuous, real-world practice and the i+1 approach, Kevin is steadily advancing toward full mastery of business Chinese.
