Improve the Patient Experience
Working in a hospital means meeting patients from diverse backgrounds on a daily basis. In most Metropolitan Sydney hospitals, many patients are of Chinese heritage, and it is not uncommon to meet a Chinese patient who does not speak English. For these patients, being hospitalized is often scary and isolating.
Identifying this issue during medical school is what spurred a fellow junior doctor friend and I to engage in Chinese lessons with Shelley to improve our ability to communicate with Chinese-speaking patients and their families.
Shelley’s lessons have been focused on improving our medical vocabulary and our ability to translate between Chinese and English both efficiently and accurately.
