Student Learning Tips

  1. Attend class regularly. Twice a week if possible.
  2. Study from good materials. The HSK materials are best. They’re extremely well written, and the vocabulary is graded.
  3. Study regularly. Try studying on the way to and from work- on the bus or train.
  4. Don’t have unrealistic expectations of progress. Be patient.
  5. Remember that learning Chinese is a journey, and a long one. Don’t be distracted by thinking about the journey. Rather, enjoy the delights of what you are learning each day.
  6. Think of the Chinese characters as friends. They’ve been around for thousands of years. They are your friends.

Stanley has been learning Chinese with Shelley since 2008.

An outstanding teacher! Chinese is a difficult language. Shelley Tian is able to explain the complexities with ease, in English. She's particularly good at explaining Chinese sentence structure, which is often very different to English. Shelley generally uses Beijing Language and Culture University Press materials, which are the very best. There are no short cuts to learning Chinese. You have to spend a lot of time in class over a long period. It’s therefore very important for students that they enjoy being in class.

Shelley’s classes are more than enjoyable – they’re fun!
