1. Find a routine for learning Chinese that works for you and that you can stick with in the long term. Cultivating consistency in the long-term is key. For me this involves using a variety of resources – like Chinese classes, podcasts, textbooks and articles – to keep learning Chinese fresh and interesting.
2. Find enjoyment in learning the language by using it to engage with the Chinese culture. For me this means enjoying a variety of Chinese songs, books, TV shows and movies as well as chatting with other Chinese speakers…and of course enjoying Chinese food!
3. Find a good teacher who can help to accelerate your progress, to help you to become aware of, and overcome, personal weak points.
What are the benefits of having Mandarin skill?
Mandarin has helped me to stand-out and given me a skill advantage in my field. There is a high demand for Mandarin speakers and knowing the language definitely makes me more competitive. It has broadened my work horizons and even expanded my job prospects to include positions overseas.
From a practical point of view, Mandarin has helped me in the workplace immensely. Being able to speak Mandarin has saved me a lot of time and vastly improved communication with my patients. Speaking a common language is a great way to put Chinese speaking patients at ease and build rapport. It also makes the work day far more interesting when you can practice your Chinese on the job!
