I would like to share just some dot points of study methods I have found effective over the last 2 years.

  • Listening to the passages in my readings while travelling to work. By listening to the reading if you feel you are able to gain a better understanding of the tempo of the language and sentence structure. It also helps to greatly improve my listening ability.
Reading the passages in my text and placing pinyin markers above all of the characters. In conjunction with the listening, this aims to improve speaking and pronunciation greatly.
  • Utilising the free version of the application DuChinese. This app provides some great stories that are very different from the HSK reading to help with your character recognition. Some of the dialogs are also very interesting and give an insight into Chinese culture and hot topics in China at the moment.
  • Watching Chinese movies with both English and Chinese subtitles. This is best done actively, stopping at interesting dialogues to write down what was said. I find that this really helps with listening and also teaches a lot of colloquialisms and appropriate ways to use them. I find dramas, thrillers and comedies to have the most relevant language use.

Carl has been learning Chinese with Shelley since 2018.

I have been attending Chinese For Professionals weekly for almost and during that time my Mandarin listening, speaking and reading ability has improved tremendously. Shelley always squeezes the most out of every lesson, tailoring her lesson plan to suit my needs, with a well structured and progressive method. I would highly recommend anyone who is genuinely interested in learning Mandarin to contact Chinese For Professionals.
